~STEP 3
Beginning Mentorships
Each of these Mentorships will include:
Tools – selection, use, and maintenance
Basic trims on live horses
Safe horse handling skills and dealing with common behavior problems
Identifying common hoof problems and recognizing how diet and lifestyle can
affect the hoof.
A minimum of three separate Mentorships, (one or 2 days each), with 3
different PHCP instructors are required. Students will schedule their own
Mentorships. The Mentors list is located in the database.
Note: the final Mentor of the Beginning series will determine the students
readiness for Independent Study. The student may be asked to do another
Mentorship to work on the skills needed to progress.

~STEP 4
Independent Study
Students entering Independent Study (IS) will need to pass a written exam,
covering the material taught in the Beginning Clinics, in addition to the
approval of their final Step 3 Mentor.
Students entering (IS) will be considered “Student Practitioners” and may be
listed on the PHCP website as such.
Students will practice their skills and gain experience. This is the time when you
will practice on your own horses, and start building a clientele, if you want to
trim professionally.
Depending on the student’s experience, this step should be sufficiently long
enough to gain experience in the “real world” and work on a variety of
horses. The suggested “Independent Study” period might be 3 - 6 months long,
depending on the student’s previous experience and progress. Students are
encouraged to use the “PHCP Chat Forum” on the bulletin board, to post
photos, and discuss any interesting or challenging cases, that they may
encounter.
Students are required to do two IS Mentorships. One Mentorship will take place
during IS and one when they feel ready to advance to Step 5 (Advanced
Mentorships). The Progress Reports, found in the Step #4 Independent Study
file, located in the “Documents & Files” section of the Forum, will be submitted
at the time of each Mentorship, by the student.
One Mentorship can be with an instructor that they have previously mentored
with in Step 3.
Before leaving IS the student will present a series of “before and after” photos
of a trim, accompanied by a written commentary. Guidelines and instructions
for the IS Media Presentation are found in the Step #4 Independent Study file,
located in the “Documents & Files” section of the Forum.

~STEP 5
Advanced Mentorships
These Mentorships will include in-depth trimming on a variety of horses.
The purpose of the Advanced Mentorships is to further improve the student’s
skills and work with the Student on areas of special interest.
A minimum of three Mentorships are required. One Advanced Mentorship may
be with a previous Mentor. One may be with a professional outside of PHCP,
such as a Farrier, Veterinarian, Body Worker, or any other Equine Specialist. *
*If this is to be their final mentorship, the student must have received the
approval of their 2nd Advanced Mentor. They must notify this Mentor before
the mentorship in order to receive approval.

~STEP 6
Completion of Elective Clinics
Elective Clinics may be taken at any time during the Training Program. Some
clinics may have a prerequisite. Each Student must take a minimum of four
Elective clinics before completing the Step 7 Media Presentation and written
Exam. Two of the Elective Clinics must include a Radiograph Reading clinic and
an Advanced Nutrition clinic.
All Elective clinics are also offered to Practitioners and Mentors for Continuing
Education.
Elective Clinics are listed on the "Clinic Schedule " page of the web site and in
the calendar on the bulletin board.

~STEP 7
Media Presentation and Final Exam
The student will present a series of “before and after” photos or a video clip of
a maintenance trim, with a written or verbal commentary. They will also need
to include a case study on a horse with hoof pathology. Details of the Media
Presentation are located in the “Documents & Files” section of the Forum. This
presentation will be posted for the Evaluation Committee to critique. In addition
to the Media Presentation there will be a written exam. Mentorship assessment
forms will also be reviewed. Upon approval, the graduate will be considered a
Practitioner and receive a “Certificate of Completion”. They may now be listed
as a Practitioner on the PHCP website. Guidelines and instructions for the Media
Presentation can be found in the Step #7 Media Presentation file, located in the
“Documents & Files” section of the Forum.
